Global Galvanizing Awards 2018 - The Green House Utrecht

Zinkinfo is proud to inform you that the project ‘The Green House' (Cepezed) has been successful as a Highly Commended project in the Judges’ Architectural Award in the Global Galvanizing Awards 2018. This special commendation has been made for ‘Architecture & Circular Economy’.
The Award has been made after careful consideration of 36 international projects submitted through 13 worldwide galvanizing industry associations. The judges awarded a first prize (The Silo, Copenhagen, COBE Architects) and two highly commended awards.

The Award has been made by a panel of judges:

• Burkhard Fröhlich, Chief Editor - Deutsche BauZeitschrift
• Matthew Wells RIBA CEng FIStructE FICE, Director - T E C H N I K E R, Consulting Structural Engineers
• Dr. Bernhard Hauke, Director - Bauforumstahl & Editor-in-Chief designate “Steel Construction”

The judges considered the following aspects:

• The innovative and effective use of galvanized steelwork in architectural projects, including the functionality as well as the aesthetics of the structure.
• The structural functionality and industrial use of galvanized steel, including the entrant’s approach towards galvanizing and incorporation of it in the design stages.
• The overall project's sustainability concept and the role that galvanized steel plays in the delivery of it. Special attention will be given to projects where it is used for its ecological benefits, which will be clearly reflected within the project's description and philosophy behind it.

The Green House drew the attention of the judges especially for its exploitation of the hot dip galvanized steel’s ability to be disassembled and reassembled without damage to the coating. The architect's commitment to the principles of circular economy and recognition of steel’s unique ability for planned re-use or reconfiguration were especially noted by the judges.
