Hot-dip galvanizing has been used on an industrial scale for nearly two centuries. Yet it remains the most efficient and reliable way to protect steel from rust. The basic principle is simple and timeless: immersing steel in a bath of molten zinc.
1. Unique zinc-iron alloys
During the galvanizing process, steel is immersed in liquid zinc at over 450°C for several minutes. This causes strong zinc-iron alloys to form on the surface.
2. Optimal adhesion and durability
These alloys provide exceptionally strong adhesion and make the layer highly resistant to wear and shock.
3. Protective patina
Within a few months, a natural patina forms on top of the zinc layer. This stable and almost impenetrable barrier provides the steel with long-term protection against external influences.
4. Cathodic protection
Even when the zinc coating is locally damaged, the steel remains protected. The surrounding zinc takes over the function of the damaged part and prevents rust from taking hold.
5. Environmentally friendly life
Just a few dozen pounds of zinc are enough to protect one ton of steel for more than 60 years on average – without significant maintenance. Thanks to this longevity, hot-dip galvanizing contributes to the sustainable use of raw materials and energy.
Hot-dip galvanized steel is an indispensable part of our living environment. From street furniture to supporting structures for industrial halls, from balconies and canopies to pedestrian bridges: each one is proof of the strengths of hot-dip galvanized steel.
Sometimes it is hardly noticeable because galvanized objects can also be painted over with a duplex system.
And after decades of faithful service? Then the steel can easily be de-galvanized and re-galvanized, giving it a second life – once again strong, reliable and low-maintenance.
