In the outlying area of Hellendoorn (Overijssel), the opportunity arose to develop a modern estate. For the current residents, this meant the chance to realize their dream home. In close cooperation with landscape experts, the municipality and the architect, a surprising plan grew that put the landscape at the center.

The villa is already visible from a great distance in the vast landscape. The horizontal main form emphasizes the characteristics of the surroundings and connects to them in an innovative way. Due to the powerful contrast with the surrounding buildings, the house forms an idiosyncratic and unique architectural statement. At the same time, the design respects the cultural-historical values of the area, among other things by making clever use of existing sightlines and height differences.

Steel as a strong logo – durable and low maintenance

The closer one follows the long access road, the more details become visible. Steel plays a leading role: the facade is given extra strength by the striking UNP400 edge beam, combined with glass and wood. This material mix gives the modern villa a warm, sophisticated appearance. The plinth and outbuilding are constructed of brick and anchor the building in the landscape.

Inside, the living spaces are primarily on the first floor. The combination of steel and glass creates a spacious, transparent interior where inside and outside blend seamlessly. The living room and veranda are experienced almost as one space. The structure at ground level consists of cross beams connected to the concrete floor and the edge beam. This structure is finished with hardwood decking. A glass balustrade is mounted on the steel UNP edge beam, attached with stainless steel glass clamps.

A duplex system was chosen for the steel structure and balustrades: a combination of hot-dip galvanizing and an additional coating. This ensures a very long life, high corrosion resistance and virtually no maintenance-ideal for a home designed entirely for durability and long-term quality.
