In the Demer valley, between Diest and Aarschot, lies Zichem-a town that flourished in the 14th century thanks to its textile industry. At the edge of the town, near the river, a cylindrical defense tower was erected at the time. Throughout history, the tower served a variety of functions: during the Eighty Years’ War it served as a cowshed and prison, and in the 19th century it was cherished as a picturesque ruin in a landscape park. In 2006, much of the tower suddenly collapsed, necessitating extensive restoration. Today, the Virgin Tower is once again open to the public.

Restoration respecting historical stratification

The original structure consists of massive ironstone masonry, up to 2.9 meters thick. Its cylindrical outer form contrasts with an octagonal inner geometry supported by Gothic rib vaults. The collapse affected both the exterior walls and parts of these vaults. The restoration, carried out according to the principles of the local heritage policy, clearly distinguishes between historic and contemporary additions while ensuring structural safety and visitor circulation.

Hot-dip galvanized steel as a sustainable contemporary intervention

A hot-dip galvanized steel canopy was placed at the base of the tower, protecting visitors from any falling debris. At the top is a second steel structure, carefully integrated into the existing walls. Inside, a new spiral staircase leads to the roof, where a galvanized steel staircase provides access to a panoramic platform overlooking the Demer Valley.

The choice of hot-dip galvanized steel was deliberate: the components are difficult to access for maintenance after installation, requiring a preservation system with extremely long service life. The roof structure was therefore prefabricated in the largest possible galvanized segments and assembled on site.

A subtle contrast between old and new

The new steel elements are clearly distinct from the historic ironstone, but show respect for the heritage. They reinforce stability, increase accessibility and allow the unique landscape to be admired from above.
