An extensive piperack infrastructure was realized for Sea Tank’s new tank terminal in Antwerp. The project included the construction of a main piperack along five new tank parks and one future park, including the connections to loading arms on land and to the jetty on the water. A total of approximately 2,000 tons of steel was involved, divided between jetties, interior and exterior piperacks, stairs and various support structures.
Because the construction had to be done in several stages, the assembly of the steel structures took about a year. A significant part of the plant is located above the Scheldt River and rests on large concrete consoles. To make construction at this complex site more efficient, a fully modular approach was chosen. On land, 24 large modules were constructed, complete with auxiliary systems and prepared for transport. Then, using floating trestles, they were safely placed in their final position above the water in just one day per two modules.
Hot dip galvanizing: essential in maritime environment
Piperacks and supporting steel structures are permanently exposed to an aggressive maritime climate. Wind, salt, moisture and temperature fluctuations can quickly corrode steel. Therefore, hot-dip galvanizing was deliberately chosen as the surface treatment.
This choice offers several advantages:
Thanks to this durable steel protection, the plant is optimally prepared for decades of intensive use, without complex post-treatments. The result is a robust, safe and economically efficient infrastructure that meets the highest requirements of the petrochemical sector.
