APM Terminals (APMT) operates worldwide and handles approximately 2.5 million containers annually at the Port of Rotterdam. At the ultramodern terminal on the Second Maasvlakte – 180 hectares in size, with 2.8 km of deep-sea quay and 500 meters of inland waterway quay – the latest generation of container ships, such as the Maersk Triple E-class, are handled without problems. The terminal has a high degree of automation and a capacity of at least 4.5 million TEUs per year.

For this advanced terminal, Voortman Steel Construction supplied 80 reefer racks. Reefers are shipping containers for refrigerated transport. The racks ensure that these containers are easily accessible in the port for connection to power and inspection.

Steel construction for optimal functionality

A reefer rack consists of a robust main structural steel frame, built up of several floors with slatted floors. Fencing is placed around it for safety, and access is possible via stairs. The design ensures that each reefer container can be easily connected and maintained, even in busy and dynamic terminal conditions.

Hot-dip galvanized steel – resistant to the marine environment

Installation directly in a salty, humid maritime environment placed high demands on corrosion protection. Therefore, hot-dip galvanizing was chosen. This treatment provides the steel with a wear-resistant, fully opaque zinc layer that protects against rusting – essential for structures that are continuously exposed to sea air, rain and temperature fluctuations.

Hot-dip galvanizing not only extends service life but also significantly reduces maintenance requirements. For a busy, 24/7 operating terminal, that means less downtime, lower maintenance costs and maximum availability of the reefer racks. In addition, the shiny, industrial appearance of the galvanized steel contributes to a uniform and professional appearance on site.

Sustainable and future-proof

With the delivery of these 80 hot-dip galvanized reefer racks, APMT Maasvlakte II is assured of a durable, low-maintenance solution that perfectly matches the terminal’s high standards and innovative character.
