Architecture with two faces
The redevelopment of the Grote Markt in Turnhout revolves around a renewed town square that is intended to function as an open “city salon.” The two new canopy structures play a key role in this. They form a hybrid design with a double function: open pergolas above the café terraces and closed bus stops for De Lijn.
Each canopy consists of three types of steel roof shells. The open variants allow white climbing roses to grow through the roof, creating a green, bright pergola that fits perfectly with the soft city approach to the new market. The closed shells are completely sealed and create comfortable, sheltered waiting areas for travelers
Thoughtful steel design for intensive use
The columns, constructed of composite steel elements, contain openings in the body plates to allow climbing plants to attach. At the bottom, the columns are de-duplicated to conceal technical features such as lighting, signage and installation components.
The roof shells consist of pleated and welded steel plates 10 mm thick, with an impressive span of 11.5 meters. Drains, tubes and fixing points are designed for easy maintenance and quick (de)assembly-essential for a public square that is heavily used. All components were fully prefabricated in the workshop, including lighting and info signs, so that assembly on the market could proceed smoothly.
All steel components (steel grade S235) were hot-dip galvanized and then coated with a three-layer paint system. This was a deliberate choice: the system guarantees maximum durability in a public space that is exposed daily to weather, wear and tear and vandalism. The combination of zinc coating and paint extends the service life considerably.
Before dipping, all welds were finished, burrs removed and sharp edges rounded. Holes for bolted connections and lifting eyes for assembly were also provided at this stage.
