Smart parking next to the station
In the Noorderhaven district, right next to the train station, stands the new P+R Zutphen. With 375 parking spaces and bicycle storage for over 600 bicycles, the building responds to the growing mobility needs of the city. The design fits in with the historic surroundings, but at the same time offers a contemporary and efficient mobility hub.
Architecture inspired by warehouses and industry
The design clearly refers to the warehouses and old industries that used to define the image at this location in the Hanseatic city. This is reflected in both the main form and the choice of materials. On one side, two sculptural, wokkel-shaped ramps form the vertical transport. These twisting forms widen upward, giving the building a dynamic, almost monumental appearance. On the other side, a characteristic warehouse facade with wooden shutters recalls the original typology of the area.
The building seems to be lifted by playfully placed hot-dip galvanized steel columns-a nod to its industrial past and to the nearby Oude IJssel Bridge. The upper facade is clad with wooden slats that let in daylight. In the evening, vertical LED strips are hidden between these slats, illuminating the facade like a lively light show.
Durably preserved and consciously designed
A combination of steel and concrete floors was chosen for a slender, efficient support structure. Because the structure remains in view, the architect sought a robust, rugged look that would match the building and provide long-term protection. Therefore, all steel construction was hot-dip galvanized, a preservation system that is not only durable but also enhances the raw, industrial aesthetic.
