One material for facade, roof and gate
In designing this passive house, the architect was confronted with strict urban planning requirements, including the requirement for a pitched roof. Instead of seeing this as a restriction, it became an opportunity to design the facade, roof and garage door as a coherent whole. The choice fell on hot-dip galvanized steel: a material that offers the desired continuity both aesthetically and technically and is also completely recyclable.
Already at the design stage, close cooperation with the galvanizing plant was established to ensure optimal results. All steel sheets come from one steel batch, selected for Si and P contents (Si < 0.03% and Si + 2.5P < 0.09%) to ensure a homogeneous zinc layer. The welding material was also carefully determined, with a maximum Si content of 0.7%.
Precision in preparation and execution
To ensure the quality of the galvanized surface, all plate operations – bending, cutting, drilling – were performed before galvanizing. The sheets were picked up immediately after cooling to avoid damage, carefully stacked with stacking wood and always handled with gloves to avoid fingerprints in the patina.
In assembly, details received a lot of attention. An adhesive tape was applied to the back to avoid friction between plates during thermal expansion. T-profiles carry the plates horizontally; vertical joints were carefully finished with zinc strips. Stainless steel screws with EPDM washer were used for fastening, so that galvanic corrosion is excluded.
The result is a home in which one material carries both architectural expression and technical performance – a pure, durable and low-maintenance skin in hot-dip galvanized steel.
