It concerns the new construction of a Public Transport Terminal at The Hague Central Station. For the Benelux Trophy Hot Dip Galvanizing, the focus is on the roof structure with a total area of 11,000 m², and the so-called spider heads for smoke and heat extraction. These spider heads are made up of a subframe that supports the primary steel structure, including glazing, and a control and operating system for smoke and heat extraction. Smoke and heat removal is by means of hinged triangular elements that can be opened by linear motors. A walkable gutter system is installed between these spider heads for the drainage of melt and rain water.
The subframes composed of steel tubes are galvanized and provided with a high-quality 2-layer (120mµ) powder coating. In addition to the specific requirements regarding preservation, the client set the bar very high especially in terms of aesthetics.
In consultation with the galvanizer, optimizations were made in the hot-dip galvanizing process, including hanging the frames in a different way. Also in combination with large frames in relation to the dimensions of the zinc bath, a very even zinc wash was thus achieved. Due to a zinc layer that had reacted too far, the final inspection revealed that a number of frames had to be de-galvanized and re-treated using the high-temperature galvanizing process in order to achieve the desired smooth surface structure.
