A successful combination of steel and brick.

The main focus of the redevelopment of the characteristic and elegant brick Pump Tower was to preserve its original appearance. At the same time, there was an ambition to give the building a new function and layer of time: transformation into an observation tower. The addition had to not only strengthen the tower’s identity, but also create a subtle harmony between old and new.

The choice of a new, restrained and constructive material was essential in this regard. Steel, with its slender and fragile properties, provides a contrasting but complementary counterpoint to the robust brick structure. For a pure and honest appearance, the steel was galvanized. This treatment emphasizes the raw beauty of the material, while giving the joints a natural look.

To make the addition as transparent and light as possible, the structure was reduced to its essence. An outer ring of slender columns forms the base, with stair stringers as connecting and supporting elements. The stairs, made of galvanized gratings, enhance the open appearance and provide a functional and visually appealing whole.

Galvanized steel: an honest and functional use of materials.

The combination of materials and minimalist design creates a special experience. As visitors climb the tower, panoramic views unfold, contrasting the airy, steel structure with the solid brick base. The galvanized steel reacts to light and weather conditions, creating a dynamic interaction with its surroundings.

Choosing transparent construction and materials that are both honest and functional adds another layer to the story of the Pump Tower. This project represents an integration of architecture, construction and stability. It preserves the distinctive value of the Pump Tower while adding a contemporary layer. The combination of steel and brick, old and new, heavy and light, results in a design that is more than a sum of materials. It is a carefully balanced dialogue between tradition and innovation, between function and aesthetics. The addition not only strengthens the identity of the Pump Tower, but also provides a unique experience for all who visit.
