The municipality of Neerijnen dreamed of one central place where the entire village of Haaften could come together. A building with space for numerous activities and users – a real Kulturhus. In close cooperation with the future users, a design emerged that grew into a lively place for social, cultural and community initiatives.

At the heart of the building is the greenhouse: a green, covered outdoor space that makes an immediate impression. The inspiration comes directly from the region’s greenhouse construction. The generous size, the bright daylight and the powerful simplicity of the materials give the space an almost sacred aura. The hot-dip galvanized steel construction plays a leading role in this: the robust, silver-gray steel captures the light and enhances the serene openness of the space. The combination with BIPV glazing in the roof creates a modern, light-flooded “outdoor plaza” that feels like an open-air cathedral – sheltered, but always in contact with the outside.

Sustainability as a foundation

Sustainability was central from day one. In consultation with the client, an extensive feasibility study was conducted to sharply define ambitions, techniques and possibilities. This resulted in a broad package of measures: integrated and conventional solar panels, solar collectors, a heat pump on WKO, a bivalent gas installation on biogas, high airtightness, optimal use of daylight, LED lighting, sustainable materials, locally produced brick and a vegetation roof.

The choice of hot-dip galvanized steel fits seamlessly with this sustainability vision. The material requires hardly any maintenance, has a long lifespan and retains its quality even in challenging conditions. This keeps the construction not only technically reliable, but also aesthetically clear and light – exactly what the architecture of the Kulturhus needs.

The result is a future-proof building with a healthy indoor climate and low energy costs: a sustainable meeting place that Haaften can be proud of.
