In March 2012, a design competition was launched for the new building for BMW MINI Amsterdam. From a company of national and international architects, the choice fell on the design by Mies Architectuur. Almost 24,000m² has been realized with a clear BMW and MINI signing along the A-10.The design involves a square building block, which is bordered with guard rails. In this building mass hang three solitary designed volumes, one for BMW, one for MINI and one for BMW’s new electric automotive concept. This BMW i spot is a world first.
In order to give the building an “automotive” appearance and to mark its location on the major A-10 traffic artery, the main façade material chosen was crash barrier. This material was applied in a hot-dip galvanized version. By giving the guardrails a certain distance in relation to each other, the building gains transparency, lightness and at the same time the parking garage behind is naturally ventilated. A practical, makeable choice, with a spectacular appearance.
