real comparison between hot-dip galvanizing and ZM steels

Is continuously coated ZM steel often seen as a full alternative to hot-dip galvanizing? A new publication from EGGA clearly lays out the facts and punctures some persistent misconceptions.

In practice, different galvanizing methods are often mixed up. However, the differences in performance and application possibilities are considerable.

This new brochure distinguishes between:

  • discontinuous hot-dip galvanizing according to EN ISO 1461
  • continuously coated steel products ZM

Using five key insights, it becomes clear that the two systems are not simply equivalent. Among other things, layer thickness plays a crucial role: continuously galvanized products have a thinner coating, which affects long-term protection and during operations such as cutting or welding .

The behavior of cut edges and damage, as well as applicability in outdoor environments, are also explained in detail. Whereas continuous galvanized steel often requires additional protection, hot-dip galvanizing offers complete and sealed protection of the entire object.
