In doing so, we have defined 3 groups of materials, divided into two states of use:
The groups are divided as follows:
The EQI value is calculated based on a life cycle analysis (LCA), which identifies all relevant environmental impacts, from the extraction of raw materials and production to the use phase, waste disposal and possible reuse. Factors such as CO2 emissions, energy and raw material consumption are taken into account. This results in an amount in euros per ton.
In a tender, the lower the MKI offered is than a predetermined reference value, the contractor receives a notional discount on the tender sum. The Dutch government will conduct its tenders based on this tool. In the National Environmental Database, various building materials can be compared over their entire life cycle. Galvanized steel scores significantly better than other materials due to its very long life without major periodic maintenance.
