HEAD STAND IN GRAMSBERGEN

NEW LIFE AFTER 40 YEARS

An existing Elascon stand was saved from demolition thanks to the enthusiasm and decisiveness of one man. In the summer of 2011, Harry Haverkotte, board member of SV Gramsbergen, heard that their neighbors from Hoogeveen would be moving to a new sports park.

The good condition of the main stand caught his eye, so he bought it for €7000 including the cost of disassembly. The stand was originally built in 1976. Then the Hoogeveen board outsourced the construction for an amount of 139,200 Dutch guilders. If you convert this into today’s value, it corresponds to about €163,000.

Within two years, a magnificent 32-meter-long grandstand stood. In the end, the stand cost only €35,000, while a newly built stand would have cost at least €200,000. Everything was reused except the bolts, nuts and old wooden boards.

The boards were replaced with new seats. The only decorative painting that needed to be done was on the inside of the roof.

The excellent condition of the galvanized steel was confirmed during disassembly. The outer structure had been exposed to weather conditions for 40 years, but the galvanized steel was in perfect condition and did not need to be re-galvanized. The remaining galvanized coating has a thickness of more than 100 μm and the stand can last for decades to come.

The rebuilt stand at SV Gramsbergen is ready for a next life cycle for the galvanized steel that could last a total of 100 years
