With the current Eurocode, the fire resistance of a steel structure does not depend on whether or not it is galvanized. Recent research shows that the heating of galvanized steel is slower because less radiant heat is transferred.
This will be included in the new Eurocode. With a fire resistance requirement of 30 minutes and relatively heavy steel profiles, the requirement can be met with an unprotected, galvanized steel structure.
Research was conducted by Ralph Hamerlinck (senior consultant at Bouwen met Staal and director of Adviesbureau Hamerlinck in Roosendaal) and Jean-Philippe Vériter (Operations Manager Fire Safety at Seco in Brussels).
